Back in 1990 I was 22 years old, doing shift work in the White House.

No, I’m not kidding! I was a kid wonder doing communication work for the National Security Council working in the Situation Room of the White House. There were times I worked my butt off – and there were times those 12 hour shifts were long and boring.

I watched a LOT of CNN. I was also a big fan of 90210 … yeah, you didn’t see that coming did you. Come on – I was 22!

Well, I also watched a lot of infomercials at 2AM.

One of those infomercials was for an information product that detailed how to make big money by finding people who . . . wait for it . . . Were owed money!

That’s right, you find people with a big check sitting on someone else’s desk and you help them get their money!

Sounds amazing.

Well I bought the info product. And then I had to buy the lists of people owed money. And then I called people on those lists. And were they happy to hear from me?

Hell no!?

Most of the numbers I had were bad. I found a person or two who’d already claimed their money two years ago.

Essentially I had a telemarketing job for myself hunting down people who either didn’t exist or who collected their money long ago.

Maybe things have changed. Maybe this would have worked better if I’d had the Internet, or could pass it all on to someone in the Philippines at $300 per month.

But really?! Of all the shams I ever fell for this was there with that ponzi scheme I tried where I mailed 5 people money, bought a mailing list, mailed out a hundred or so letters and never got anything back in return.

So . . . it’s absolutely stunning me to see someone out there, right now, selling this “help people claim their cash” scheme.

I don’t know – maybe it was just me and this is a totally revised, killer system making money for people. But I know what I know and what I know is . . .

My advice: take a pass!

It sounds great to go hire an employee in another country where a good living is $400 per month.  Tim Ferris made it sound so easy, didn’t he?

But here’s the deal . . .

I’ve hired numerous people from India and the Philippines and I’ve burned through tens-of-thousands of dollars that did very little to help my business.

Was it their fault or mine?  Easy answer – it wasn’t their’s.

Outsourcing simply means hiring someone outside of your business to do something for your business.

That can come in the form of a full-time, or part-time *independent contractor* (that’s important for tax and benefit implications).

But the problem with this arrangement is that your job THEN becomes managing this person – or persons.  You need to keep them busy.  And if you now have a new job, keeping someone else busy, how freed up are you?

Exactly.    

DON’T HIRE ANYONE without first having a system to give them.  DON’T HIRE ANYONE without having crystal clarity about what you want done and how.

(I’m going to point you to a John Jonas resource in a bit that will put some of these elements in place for you).

I’ve consumed tons of information on this subject and this book I rate above all others.

Maybe it’s obvious but there are some jobs that you want a full-time, dedicated person for and then there are other jobs where it makes sense to hire on a job-to-job basis, and then still others where it’s worth paying a little extra to have the job crowdsourced.  (If these are new terms then you need David’s book, just like I did.)

In order to get from where you are to where you want to be something has to change in the way(s) you operate.

You cannot achieve your dreams by continuing in the way you operate now. Change is REQUIRED.

One of the fundamental changes required is to place a value on your time. Stick with me here, because it’s PROBABLE you’ve heard this before but it’s CRITICAL you fully embrace this NOW.

Let’s take a model income goal of $52,000 per year. Let’s take 4 weeks per year off. And let’s only work 28 hours per week in those 48 weeks of work.

That means we’ll divide 52,000 by weeks worked (48), times hours per week (28) to arrive at what our time is worth on an hourly basis. 52,000/(48×28)=$38.70

The shift in mindset means that you don’t do anything, personally, that someone else will do for you for less than $30.

You don’t spend two hours writing an article if a REAL writer will write that same article for you for $30.

And *IF* it’s not worth paying someone else $30 to do it then is it REALLY worth doing at all?

You don’t spend an hour with Hostgator customer support if you can hire someone from the Phillipines who will do that for you for $5 per hour.

Why? Because if it’s not obvious, you will never be WORTH (and thus earn) $39 per hour if you’re doing work that’s only worth $5 per hour.

The Fallacy of FREE Traffic

Many people shy away from paid traffic because they see the POTENTIAL for getting “free” traffic via SEO.

While this CAN be done it’s a slave labor gamble – what I mean by this is that you make yourself work for nothing (but at a real cost of $40 per hour) in the hopes that you MIGHT get some traffic, eventually, and that traffic MIGHT then buy something.

And while you WAIT for this to happen you get sidetracked, buy the next magic bullet (further distancing yourself from the goal because you’re spending, not earning) and retarding your progress further.

Free traffic is VERY costly if you’re doing it yourself. You cannot do it yourself – not beyond the necessary steps of determining your system for doing it so that it can be handled by someone else.

Once you establish this mindset then you can begin to see ways of leveraging your resources – which is what this is really ALL about – LEVERAGE.

PS – If you don’t know how much you want an hourof your time to be worth then you’re driving blind – you must know.

PSS – If you’re working a slave job right now then$40 per hour might sound outrageous if you’re making $15. When you work for yourself you need to *at least* double the hourly estimate you’re making at a job.
